I love reading your writing. And with the perm, I remember seeing photos of my mom from this time really trying to understand the perm choice. I thought it was an 80s thing and had no idea the cultural context.
I've read in more than a few places, that ajummas are considered a third gender–more as a joke, but I'm guessing with the change in dress and shorter hairstyle, they start losing their sense of "femininity." Maybe that's why there's been a backlash against it. Fascinating!
My kids like the Lego magazine :) Also for a podcast recommendation have you listened to the 6 episode podcast “Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong”? It’s from American Public Media and explains the different ways reading has been taught in schools. Highly recommended to all parents, teachers, and everyone really. It’s so compelling and shocking- I can’t recommend enough.
Thank you Youngna for recommending my newsletter. I have yet to meet a mom from our mother's generation who didn't have that perm :)

I guess it says something about my stage of life that I literally said Ada's words to my dad only a few weeks ago.
We are all Ada sometimes.
“Don’t help me” sounds like my daughter!
