I'm not in soup mode yet but just wanted to shout out the very funny observation that the Owala is the Stanley cup of the Brooklyn set. Rings true IMO with my Brooklyn kids! Love the way you write about your kids and parenting.
Butternut squash soup is my eternal favorite... if I can get myself to peel the squash. Peel, chop, steam, liquefy+blend, simmer with a bit of salt, shredded ginger, a dash of coconut milk (actually, I have never tried this but I am sure it's good).
I started doing a sheet pan version. I don’t peel and instead cut in half and roast with onions, an apple, garlic, and some spices. When it’s done scoop out squash, add liquid, and purée all.
We went to a hip Wburg/Greenpoint Japanese restaurant called Rule of Thirds for a friend’s baby-is-coming party last weekend, and they served a miso soup that was just … it floored me. And then I looked at the menu and the ingredients said awase miso (mix of white and red miso), dashi (lots of it from what I tasted) and … almond butter!!! Wut!!! I’m a recovering miso soup purist and I’m STOKED to give this a try at home. So nutty and rich!
unfortunately i am bad at recipes, but here are some combos for soups, they all start with a base of aromatics (whichever makes sense), feel free to text for ratios
- kale, white beans, and italian sausage in a chicken broth base with a tiny bit of cream and some thyme.
- chicken, cabbage, scallion, ginger, so much garlic
- broccoli, green curry paste, 1/2 chicken broth, 1/2 coconut milk -- then vitamix to a smooth puree with a bunch of spinach.
The apple website is very funny. In my 20s my officemates and I used to geek out on an industrial site called BevNet that ranked and reviewed “beverages” — all sodas and juices and sports drinks. It brought us a lot of joy and we deemed it the best thing on the Internet in 2002-6. RIP BevNet.
I would have loved BevNet too. I think my love for the apple ranking site is that it reminds me of the weird, old, delightful internet that's hard to come by now. I also found this site: https://gnarlypippins.com/
He specializes in wild apples, fruit tree consultation, and making custom pruning saws. Incredible.
I second the Paul Bertolli cauliflower soup mentioned above, and worth making croutons to go with. Smitten kitchen’s red lentil dal style soup is awesome. Rachel Roddy’s pasta e ceci is an absolute favorite. Heidi Swanson usually has amazing soup recipes on her site/in her books.
Check out the cookbook “Every Season is Soup Season”… recipes are all so good. It’s vegetarian, but she offers a protein option for every single recipe (which my omnivore family appreciates but the recipes really do hold their own without meat.)
Loved the Cosmic Crisp review on Apple Rankings. Truly one of the most nothing apples I have ever tried. I would almost rather eat a Red Delicious. No… that’s not true.

If you love apples, you might love North Woods by Daniel Mason. I’ve just finished it and it was a truly wonderful, polyphonic, immersive joy
Ooh gtk. That’s been on my list!
Oo also Roberto by Helen Rosner (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/kitchen-notes/the-many-lives-of-roberto-a-soup) which my kids always eat if i add in some tiny pasta.

My favorite soup recipes, crowd favorites every time:
https://www.yellowblissroad.com/tortellini-soup-with-italian-sausage-spinach/
https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/lightened-creamy-chicken-noodle-soup/ (this freezes great too)
and soup-adjacent is my mom's chili recipe, which makes a metric f*ck ton, but it great and freezes well too:
3 lbs. ground beef
3 medium onions, chopped
3 cloves garlic
1/3 c ketchup
1 can beef broth
1 bay leaf
2 shakes of basil
Oregano Leaves
2 large cans whole tomatoes (28 oz)
1 medium can pork and beans (15 oz)
1 pkg brown gravy mix
1 pkg chili mix
salt and pepper
1 small can tomato paste
1 1/2 Tbsp. ground cumin
Chili Powder
Kidney beans (2 cans)
Brown ground beef, onion, and garlic. Drain excess grease. Mix together with all remaining ingredients in crock pot and cook at LOW heat for 10 hours.
Random product shout out, but I LOVE these things for storing soup leftovers in my freezer: https://www.soupercubes.com/?srsltid=AfmBOopoZfYenTiPeVraLGSd1T4dWy4R1FnYzanzZLqfhP-55BFWOPzT

I make this all the time this but used canned beans (!) and skip the pancetta, it's still delicious and then very easy
The applerater really read me for a fool for liking the gosmic crisp. I’m shaken.
I just finished All Fours and am desperate for someone to talk to about it!

A bowl of red delicious apples individually wrapped in Saran Wrap at the LAX airport is still one of the saddest sights in recent memory
Ha! Like a cursed object.
